Hello and welcome to Year 2! We are really looking forward to continuing and sharing in your learning journey this year and have planned plenty of lessons to engage, excite and inspire your learning. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us on our class e-mails and we will be more than happy to support you.

Home Learning

Home learning will be set on our Seesaw learning platform on a Friday and expected to be handed in on the following Friday.

Reading Books will be changed weekly. There is a box in each classroom for the children to put their book in. We would like to encourage children to change their book at least once a week to increase their reading fluency. Please can you ensure that you sign your child's Reading Record each time you hear them read. Children will be rewarded through our Reading Rockets incentive every time they read at home.

Reading Eggs is a great way for your child to continue improving their spelling, reading and comprehension skills. The levels allow children to read a variety of genres and each book has eight different activities to complete, ranging from dictionary work to answering comprehension questions.

Times Table Rock Stars and Numbots is a great way for your child to practise their times tables and number skills. Logins can be found in the front of your child's Reading Record book.

English

We will be following the Read Write Inc Phonics programme to support our spelling, writing and reading skills. We will have several key text focuses, which we will use to support our story writing, diary writing and report writing.

Maths:

This term, we will be focussing on Measurement and Fractions. We will be learning our 2,5, and 10 times tables and completing a weekly challenge to ensure quick recall and mastery of associated facts.

Science:

In Science, we will be learning all about the life cycle of plants and the key features of plants surviving in different temperatures and conditions.

Geography:

Our topic for this term is "Islands" and the children will be studying British Islands and their key features. They will learn the names and locations of the islands, as well as be able to identify different types of island. They will use comparison skills while looking at the Galapagos Islands and the Scilly Isles. The will also develop and apply key map skills, using co-ordinates and compass points to support them.

Design Technology:

Our topic is called 'Shelter' and children will study various different types of structures that can be used as shelter. They will follow directions to design, make and evaluate their own hut using woodwork techniques such as measuring, joining and cutting. Following this process they will design their own 'island shelter' and consider how to apply their new skills in the development of this.

Computing:

Using Purple Mash, the children will learn about creating digital pictures using a variety of tools.

Music:

Using Charanga, the children will be learning 'Friendship Song' and focusing on the musical genre of pop. This will include learning key skills in recorder and glockenspiel playing.
